NETWORKING TERMINAL ADVANCES

MIDS JTRS Program Moves One Step Closer
to Delivering Advanced Networking Capabilties
Into the Hands of the Warfighter

Editor’s Note: This is another in a regular series of updates on the Joint Tactical Radio System (JTRS), as provided by the program’s Joint Program Executive Office (JPEO).

The Multifunctional Information Distribution System (MIDS) JTRS terminal has been approved for limited production. The acquisition decision memorandum was signed December 23, 2009, by Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Ashton B. Carter. “The MIDS JTRS limited production decision i
s a major accomplishment for the MIDS program and the JTRS enterprise, and is the culmination of years of outstanding work by all the people, both in government and industry, who support and are associated with the MIDS JTRS terminal,” said Navy Captain Scott Krambeck, the MIDS program manager.

The MIDS Program Office is one of five major ACAT 1D programs within the JTRS enterprise providing affordable and scalable solutions that achieve the Department of Defense vision for advanced networking waveform capability for airborne, maritime, and ground domains. MIDS JTRS is a software defined networking terminal that will be NSA certified with the Link-16 Waveform, include Link-16 Enhanced Throughput and Link-16 Frequency Remapping, and be information assurance modification ready.

This decision confirms that the MIDS JTRS terminal has demonstrated it has met all acquisition milestone criteria, including successful completion of an operational assessment test phase, and is poised to enter the production phase. With the successful completion of this limited production decision, the MIDS JTRS program moves one step closer to delivering the advanced networking capabilities into the hands of the warfighter. It is on track to enter initial operational test and evaluation in the third quarter of the current fiscal year.

The MIDS Program Office is now authorized to enter into limited production of 41 terminals for both Air Force and Navy platforms, including the Navy’s F/A-18E/F Super Hornet.

“MIDS JTRS continues to blaze new trails for the JTRS enterprise by being the first JTRS software defined networking terminal to complete security verification testing and an operational assessment and enter into the limited production phase. Next up is formal NSA certification, operational test, and final production phase. The warfighter requires this terminal, and we are doing our best to deliver a quality product to meet their needs. I am honored and humbled to lead this awesome MIDS JTRS team,” said Krambeck. ♦
